The Chinese New Year in one of the most important holidays in Chinese culture, just like the Christmas Day for Western countries. What’s more, Chinese New Year has influenced for many other countries that they also celebrate this festival. Like most festivals, the Chinese New Year also has many distinctive customs and traditions.
Displaying Couplets
Couplets are pairs of long, bright red banners that traditionally have blessings or well-meaning phrases written in Chinese. If you want to participate in this custom you can easily make your own couplets, or buy them at a store.
HongBao or Red Envelopes
In the Chinese New Year Eve, the elders usually give the red envelopes to the younger generation, for example, parents give the red envelopes to their children. Red envelopes contain money and decorate with blessings to children. Unlike western countries, where people give material items as gifts, in China, momey is usually the default gift given to others.
The Lion Dance and the Dragon Dance
The Lion Dance is one of the most important dances of the Chinese New Year. You can participate in this tradition by attending a Chinese New Year parade or watching the celebration on the TV to experience the condition. The Dragon Dance is the probably the most well-known tradition of the Chinese New Year and it is performed by a large number of dancers all playing one part of the long dragon.
Firecrackers
Burning firecrackers is long term tradition of Chinese New Year. People believe that the sound can chase off evil spirit. Burning fireworks is another way of celebrations, Chinese people burn fireworks in the New Year Eve, you can watch the fireworks show on the TV.
